Gulfstream timer post-mortem

In retrospect, the Gulfstream timer issue postings left some unanswered, and to me, troubling questions.

Full disclosure first -- I regularly use Ragozin sheets, but have used TG sheets for days when I am interested in a single race only and don't want to ruin my ROI by paying for a full day (Ragozin forces me to its competition by refusing to sell single-race sheets).

If I were clocking independently, I would want to clock the full race -- from gate to finish -- and would measure the run-up distance to get the exact distance of the race. (No race is truly 6f, there is always run-up to the timer-beam, which varies from track to track, distance to distance and day to day.

Perhaps I am misreading things, but it seems to me from your posting that your clocker does not clock the full race, but rather starts the clocking from the timing beam. I say this because you wrote that typically, the run-up distances are different for sprints and routes, and that this is an argument for split sprint/route variants. If you were clocking the full race, different run-up distances for routes and sprints would have no bearing on the variant.

I was also suprised to read your post that the Gulfstream problems were thought to only impact internal fractions, when this later turned out not to be true. Independent accurate clockers could not have avoided recognizing the full extent of the problem and probably were really pissed at Beyer for exposing it because the accurate times would have value. Perhaps you hadn't checked in with your clockers before posting, or perhaps you were trying to keep the problem quiet to cash in on bets -- inquiring minds want to know.

Your site has done a lot to raise the level of handicapping education and discussion and I appreciate that. I'm truly interested in your answers more as an observer of handicapping than as a customer. Since my day job and status as father of a toddler prevent me from getting to the track very often, no one is making much money selling me sheets at this point. I realize that the other judgments involved in making variants may be more important than the raw data, but I still want to know more about how you gather & process that raw data -- the times of races. Thanks.
