I tend to believe you about the controversy. You sound kinda like I get at times bad mouthing a horse when one of my favorites gets beat. It's a competitors thing with me...I don't like to lose. It's not the money...its that I want to be right...lol.
This is a tough game because you're gonna get beat by circumstances as often as a better horse beats you. Ask J.B. he had a rocky day saturday. Lots of seconds...winners where the other part of the perfecta didn't get up...demanding odds to bet a winner he didn't get so he didn't bet. But he'll be back tomorrow or next week. But you've got to be honest with yourself too. The amount you come home with at the end of the day or week is the final arbiter.
I remember I once predicted Lukas would never win the Belmont...well whats he got now?:
They really ought to send Commendable to Purina though.
He won the thing 3 years in a row and then with a horse that really never won anything else in its life. I don't think he's been good for the game and I think hes hard on a horse but the truth is in his old age hes become a better TRAINER. He's killed enough horses to have learned what NOT to do in certain circumstances. He still is a rotten judge of young horseflesh however...lol.
But Thunder Gulch has a slew of goodies...Point Given among them. Isn't Spain one as well? Theres a bunch of others too. You could be right of course...I don't know why P.G. went bad Derby Day. But I had already tenatively drawn the conclusion that Maria's Mon, Thunder Gulch and Holy Bull are producing enough runners to be serious long term stallions. Whether Gulch and Bull get their Classic winner is a matter of circumstances.
But the truth is the only Classic really worth winning is the one in November. Theres usually a little more in that race than early developing three year olds. Its a race for the best horse. Money nothwithstanding I'd trade five derby's for one Breeders Cup Classic. Besides, I haven't picked a derby winner since 1993 and I get the Breeders Cup almost every year.
