Tough to fill Frank D's shoes with his seminar recaps, but will give it a shot.
In the first race TGAB had a strong positive view on Roman Revival, but also felt the Pletcher dropdown Zamjara would be tough. When the only horse Roman Revival beat was the broke down Zamjara, the natives started getting restless early (or maybe it was just me "piling on TGAB" a bit.
In the second race, TGAB liked 5-6-7, and they ran 5th, 6th and 7th. Note: After hearing much of the barbecue crew talk up the 2, and then Maggie adding to it, TGAB called a late audible and hit the exacta in his own telephone account.
In the third race TGAB liked the 1, who ran a mediocre 3rd. AT this point we had to shut off TGAB's cell phone as the half of the seminar attendees that weren't sitting with us at the barbecue were calling and or texting TGAB looking for seminar refunds.....
In the 4th race, TGAB had a small push on Choir Director at big odds, while recognizing that the number power of eventual winner, Come as you are, was significant.
In the 5th race, TGAB liked first time turfer Tapit Wicked, who did no real running.
In the 6th race, TGAB liked the 1, who ran pretty well first out, but finished 6th in this race, and liked a couple longshots, including the Sciacca horse who didn't run much.
Moments before needing to enter the witness protection program, TGAB came through in the 7th, with an assist from Michael D. TGAB liked the 1 and 3, with a negative view on the 2-1 Chad Brown favorite. Michael D. pointed out something about the 8 (I forget what) and TGAB added him to the ticket and cashed the exacta, likely missing the triple only because of the bad step the 1 took mid-stretch.
8th race was a miss, with a mild positive opinion Gio's calling who ran 7th and the entry, which was 3/5 and finished off the board.
The 9th was a bit of a TGAB special. He of course mentioned that My Man SAm would be tough to beat, but talked up Tale of VErve and the big figure he had last year in the Preakness and how he could run back to it today at a price. As Frank D. and I frowned, and I reminded TGAB that was in the slop where somebody had to run second to American Pharaoh, TGAB stuck to his positive view on a horse I KNEW HAD NO SHOT TO WIN. Bingo. Verve blows the start, loses more ground than the 3-5 favorite on both turns and wins at 17-1. (P.S. - somewhere between the seminar and the race, TGAB lost his conviction and somehow bet the 1-2) Ugh.
In the Diana, TGAB liked Mrs. McDougal but recognized that Miss Temple City was the horse to beat. Small positive view also on Wekeela. Fillies 4th, 7th and last in a tough race.
In the finale, TGAB had Winter Springs as a toss and Aripeka, Procurement and Dream Man, who ran 1-2-3. Bingo. A nice cash to send people home with.
A nice way to end a good day at the Spa.
It was good to get off the duck early today, cashing the pick-5 with Frank D. Which had me in a short-lived good mood as Frank D and I waited in the IRS line to have our pictures taken. AFter the second picture, the teller told us she didn't remember the last time the camera had to take so much punishment taking pictures of our mugs back to back.... .While likely true, seemed unnecessary to say it !! :)
Good luck to all. Good job by TGAB under heavy duress and constant verbal abuse at the barbecue all afternoon......
