I believe your question will result in very subjective responses. First of all, I think you will look back and chuckle to yourself about your considerations. Further, I'd like to congratulate you for the decision to go.
I for one found my first trip to be magical. Not unlike finding oneself in Brigadoon. Technicolor for the first time. Its a sensory experience.
Yes they have racing. Speaking for myself my first could have been a weekday, or a weekend any weekend. Each week has its subtle uniqueness. Veterans may debate the cards and even individual races for me my trip was transcendental I know there was racing yet I hardly remember one.
I remember the lawn, the grandstands (I swear they creak), the patrons, the banners, the proximity to downtown. The food.
