Welcome to the TG board. Looks like you aren't quite a "late arrival" with a week or so until Oaks Day. Here is a start on your research that gets you from '76 to '03.

Funny Cide's last workout before the Derby was a snappy 5 furlongs in 58 2/5 seconds on April 29 at Belmont. Tagg flew the gelding from New York to Churchill Downs on April 30 and sent him out for a 1-mile jog on May 1 and a 2-mile jog on May 2. On Derby morning he had one last jog around the track.
