I finished the book Death of a Racehorse last night by Katie Bo Lillis.
Kudos to a woman who clearly loves horses and racing (I think) for tackling a subject as in depth as anyone else I've seen go down this path. A few takeaways that may interest you in reading yourself.
1. It reads like a Baffert biography in part as he agreed to on the record interviews with her and she tells his story from childhood for whatever reason til present day.
2. She references a few salacious details that are unnecessary such as a former President's interest in exploring Canadian territory that she states is only Rumor. She also inserts herself into the story as it relates to Frank S which, again, not necessary.
3. Big picture, she missed the mark on three notes at least for me. First, she didn't connect the recording where Servis and Rhien discuss SGF 1000 as potentially testing positive for Dex and all of the Beta and Dex positives mentioned in the book. She also didn't connect the Medina Derby positive to the Lance Armstrong beta positive test and his quick retort of the skin rash and skin cream when later we learn that wasn't exactly accurate. And she didn't mention Dr. Maylin's many frozen samples of suspicious samples that he saves hoping one day to figure out what is in them. I've always wondered why Maylin's lab wouldn't have to release the names of the trainers on those samples he is saving.
Overall, she tackled a subject that needed to be tackled for racing. While her simplistic solution to racing's decline is too simplistic for me, it does come from the heart and she believes it so again, kudos to her. She clearly put in massive amounts of time and effort on the research end and the writing. I applaud her efforts overall and wish more in the game would chase down the information she did.
The Chad Brown details were interesting . . .
