Nearly is the "read" of the race. At this Meet he has a 9 length win, a 5 length win and and 5 3/4 length win. He has 6 works since his last race and 60 days time. He can be excused for the Turtle like come home of 34 and 1 in his last. That stalking half mile in 45:4 was no joke. He is the fastest horse in the race. But.....and there is always a but. He is coming in off a 4 point bounce. Which took him back to his Maiden Winning Top. If you are confused on where he goes from here join the crowd. He drew outside but he is quick off his feet so I expect him to be sitting off the pace just outside of.....
Commandment. He made a small forward move in his last. And yet Jockey Ortiz bails to go ride Renegade in Arkansas. Who up to this point in time has a win in the Sam F Davis. What does Irad know and when did know it? He picks up Pratt which is essentially a wash and Pratt has the mount on Pre Derby Favorite Palladin for Chad Brown. So is this a one off ride or a back up plan for everyone? Ortiz rode Jeff Ruby Steaks winner last weekend for Cox so he has Derby options.
Chief Wallabee as was previously discussed before the FOY was touted to us by our Payson Clocker. "Mott 1st time starter in the 4th at Gulfstream this Saturday. This one is the Goods". When half jokingly we replied "The Goods as in he should win at 1st asking at Gulfstream Park in a Maiden race or another potential Sovereignty". We were kidding of course. When the Caller paused and said "let me think for a moment". The immediate reply was "you already answered"....
The rail was dead on FOY Day so Pratt can't be faulted for leaving a gapping hole. Commandment took advantage and beat his rival. But his rival made a forward move too and ran faster.
Bill Mott and the Balls are not going to kill a good horse to make the Derby. I think he sits a little further back and lets Commandment chase Nearly. The inside draw will save ground. He has the punch to make a solid turn move and if you don't think he can finish go back and look at this Maiden race. He mowed down a very nice horse. Will he mow them all down this Saturday or are they waiting for the 1st Saturday in May like they did with Sovereignty? Only time will tell.....
Good Luck everyone!!
