Great point - yeah, if I had a horse in Kentucky I would be worried about a vet scratch, especially going into the Kentucky Derby where it seems like they are going to do everything in their power to prevent a breakdown on national TV. I am all for protecting the health of horses and jockeys, but perhaps the pendulum is swinging too far one way where they are disqualifying horses that seem like they could have run safely as it seems like the vets in Kentucky are getting more and more aggressive. I am guessing they all were not direct vet scratches, but at Kee today there were 16 horses declared early in the day out of the 10 races with 91 total horses entered - that's almost 20%. The weather was perfect on closing day. Add in the four gate scratches through half the card including the horse that just dropped to favoritism in a 4 horse field right before they loaded, you have almost 1/4 of the entered horses scratched for some reason or another - seems like a lot to me.
