Long time trainer Leo O’Brien is way past relevant. Today he saddles Backsideofthemoon in the Grade-3 Excelisor at Aqueduct. It’s been 5 plus years since Leo has even saddled a graded stakes runner.

In the 80’s & 90’s Leo was way more than relevant especially at the Spa. He campaigned Fourstardave & Fourstars Allstar for owner Richard Bomze. The latter being the first American trained horse to win a Euro Classic, 1991 Irish 2000 Guineas under Mike Smith. (P-Dub 👍)

An all around good guy who has been on the NYRA backside for 40 plus years after a career as a jump rider. He and Bomze were known to hold court at The Parting Glass a pint or 2 of Guinness was always involved. Maybe best known in later years as Johnny V’s father-in-law. His daughter Leona and JV’s dating and marriage in 94 was said to be brokered by Mike Smith who had to lobby Leo to let Johnny date his daughter.

Good luck,

Frank D.
