Thinking that last years KD Saturday card might be similar to this years I went to the archives and took a look with the intent of comparing the two. I stopped after two dissimilar races concluding the idea was not worth the trouble.
I'll post my thoughts because they are as quirky as the meet imo.
Race 1 $130K MSW
In 2017 the 1st Race on the 1st Sat @ KD was MSW for 2 y/o filliesa at 1 mile. This year 3 y/o's+ at a mile and a 1/2. Not at all a similar group.
2017 !st Race - The 3rd choice Cash Out 6/1 (T) George Arnold, (O)G Watts Humphrey, (J)Geroux edged 2nd choice Coach Rocks while the 8/5 M. Casse in from GP favorite American Halo ran 5th trailing by too much early.
Neither of last years top two trainers have an entry in race #1 that I noticed this year. Last years winning jockey Geroux is scheduled to ride Fra Mauro c/b best of a bunch shipping? over from ELP. The Sar refugees would be #5 Prompt off a most recent poor effort and now trained by Mott. Then #3 Campaign Asmussen/Leparoux for those with high potential ?'s. If Achikulak gets in I'll add some to his weight carried.
In 2017 the second race was a MSW sprint for 3 y/o's and up.
(T) Sancal Murat's favorite trounced the field.
2018
This year the 2nd race is a $10k starter allownce @ 1M+. I'm not sure of the purse but at first glance I was thinking the race probably isn't valueable enough to attract many out-of-towners?
At first glance this heat seems quite a puzzle with several fast dirt horses (who I suggest are apt to get confused on this layout) a bevy of articicial surface specialist trying to carry that form over to the lawn, and of course some in form turf veterans.
I'd like Oro Bird better if trainer Hancock had won a race occasionally. The old mare I am miss brown could get a piece at a reasonable price and will be my small across the board action bet here. I just can't get the image of dirt sprinters crawling home knee deep in clover, out of my mind, while a couple late runners go by like an Amtrack commuter train.
I invite some others to take try at a few of the other heats on a card that is both chalky and a head scratcher if memory serves.
