Maybe Its A Seasonal Thing (1063 Views)

Through the fall and winter and maybe stretching back to last summer trainer Bob Baffert was begining to resemble a mortal. His trainees didn't win everything in sight. They didn't look like freaks every time they raced.

That all changed Sunday. In the 7th race an Allowance or optional claimer to prove my point BB's entry was 6/1. Zatter, as the 4th choice in a group of 7 was 6.40/1 in fact. His competition was not chopped liver. Distinctive B, the favorite ran his race and all but had it won when....

But first Zatter. He ran three times in 2017 as a two year old. His 2nd race was fast and then last year 2018 something must have gone wrong because he was off all year. So he reappeared on Jan 5th 2019 with a very lackluster effort in an AlwX1.

So there we were in mid stretch and Distinctive B was gonna win and the pricey Zatter seemed headed for 2nd ahead of 2nd choice Coil Me Home. Then Zatter just exploded and went to the lead to win going away.

Surprised I was when the next race brought us Solomini another BB oddity. He doesn't run the competition off their feet, in fact he doesn't win. He is still somewhat of a celebrity so he was odds on but even the TG analysis wasn't sold on his number power even though he had an edge of a point or so.

This race was at a mile so Solomini lost whatever # advantage he had by going a little wide on the second turn coming out of the turn 3 wide. Pacesetter was still leading at mid stretch when Solomini did a Zatter impersonation and flew home to win by 3+1/2 also pulling away.

All I could think of was a few years back when the usual suspects were racing horses on the east coast that so obviously "broke again" code for just didn't tire and won races in the last few hundred yards by humbling spent opponents.

Trainer Bob seems to be gaining some Spring momentum and just when I couldn't ID his older horses. Watch out for the above mentioned two.
