My friend Tom used to always say about horses he thought couldn’t lose: “If he doesn’t win, there ought to be an investigation.” Well, after STREET TO INDY improbably won Oaklawn’s 7th today at 27-1 for white-hot trainer Robertino Diodoro, there should be another kind of investigation. [Of course, I’m kidding. And besides, this is Oaklawn mister! Where the stewards never take action.]
Diodoro is absolutely killing it at Oaklawn so far this season. I don’t think in all my years I’ve ever seen anything like what’s going on here. [With the possible exception of trainer Frank Passero's clenbuterol saga at Gulfstream years ago.] Diodoro has won 13 races from 32 starts (32 - 13 - 6 - 2; 41%) before today. And 7 out of his last 8 (the race he didn’t win, he was 2nd by a head). He’s certainly come ready for Hot Springs. Dropdown wins. Layoff wins. Right-back wins. He’s put the good wood to everything! The boys are in early and then his odds might drift up a bit. I’ve caught his train almost every time. But he slipped one by me today and it cost me 20k at least: In today’s 7th, 7-year old gelding STREET TO INDY, new to the Diodoro barn, decided to run out of his skin! Wide all, the horse exploded. What? To a ThoroGraph 0? 2? We’ll see. Check out his sheet when he runs back.
