From the AP:
Famed trainer B. Bob Lukiss reported today that Belmont day also-ran David (G.) Patent is less than a week away from his first breeze in anticipation of a July 13 return to competition.
"He's been chompin' at the bit for the past two weeks and I've been able to get some pretty good gallops into him. I stopped on him because we didn't want him to get too stale after all of the competition. If it was up to D(G)P, he'd of kept running every day, but you have to do what's best for him in the long run."
When asked if he had an explanation for DGP's mediocre Belmont day performance, Lukiss replied: "I don't really know for sure. Maybe it's because we told the rider to follow Perfect Drift around the track and he took those instructions a bit too literally."
As for changes to D(G)P when he returns, Lukiss added: "We're putting blinkers on when he comes back. He was getting a tendency to savage other competitors and we don't want any DQs because of that. The blinkers will help keep him focused on the task at hand."
Lukiss expects D(G)P's first breeze to involve a proposal for the July 13/14 competition. "We have a very innovative proposal to put on the table. Just you wait. You'll see it on July 3."
Stay tuned for more.
