Maiden claimers are a crap shoot much of the time. It's imperative to look at the Trainer stats of the firsters and see how they do in the 1st time Mclm. Jock/trn combos might reveal intent.

I always look for a horse who has a small new top, even if slower by several points they'll often surprise the public by racing well at a nice price. Unfortunately, a general rule of thumb, if a Mclm looks good on the sheets he most likely looks good on the Beyers and will be over bet. Solid play against any Mclm with a big top, you'll lose every so often, but the rewards more than make up for it.
