I'm a little surprised no one mentioned the passing of H. Allen Jerkens last week. Given the current climate of racing and all the controversy Mr. Jerkens deserves a lot of respect for his accomplishments and the unwavering dignity with which he went about his business. Plus there was the time I got to Saratoga without much preparation and picked out one of his runners in a maiden special for no good reason except...liking Jerkens...and getting an $80 winner. Annuities. I will not forget that one.
