Espied?
Espied is well known in handicapping circles, with respective degrees of probability is... In context, as in:
a. Calvin Borel, apparently trapped, espied an opening to escape the rail and run unencumbered. Borel, declined the espied invitation, stayed upon the rail and won the Derby in the stretch drive.
b. (Name the Jockey), saving ground upon the tight turned Turf Course, espied an opportunity to ease his horse out and let him run on. The hole quickly closed and the horse though best finished 6th beaten 3 lengths.
