I have owned horses based in California since 1990. The standard fee to a trainer is 10% for a win plus a percent or two for the barn personnel. Daily racing fee and vet bills are separate. That was the way it was in 1990 and still today. I never had a private trainer -- Wally Dollase was my trainer through all the good days -- Deputy Commander, Ten Most Wanted, Meteor Storm, Helmsman, Good Journey. The reason I mention this is because he passed away on Friday -- may he rest in peace. A very good man like most people in this fabulous industry with unfortunately a few exceptions.
I do not have all of the facts regarding this situation but the owner has had a reputation of being a jerk (not the name I generally use for people of his ilk) and the racing manager sounds worse. Lawsuits are very expensive and I am sure the owner is very comfortable in a court room. Good luck to Maria.
