No, I'm not joining the group raggin on the TG numbers (no pun intended). I'm referring to REAL mysticism, or as real as one accepts it can get.

I turn on the History Channel this morning while I'm eating breakfast, and lo and behold is the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton. Now I can come to only one of several conclusions. First, that it is merely coincidence that a horse bearing his name will be running in the biggest race of his life tomorrow. Second, that a programmer for the History Channel has a weird sense of humor. These two are throw-out theories. Therefore the only plausible explanation is divine intervention. A message from on high. I felt obligated to share this revelation.

Bear in mind, however, that the Shackleton voyage involved getting stranded in the Antarctic where his ship, the Endurance, was eventually crushed by the sea ice, and it took two years for all the men to be found and return home to England. So maybe this as a warning rather than a call to action. Nonetheless, I am now forced to at least cover my wagers just in case Sir Shackleton receives the divine intervention he will need in order to hit the board in the Preakness.

BTW, remember too that the real Sir Shackleton went a little stir-crazy back in England and soon thereafter convinced half his crew to take another expedition to the Antarctic. He had a heart attack while the ship was in for repairs in Rio, and was buried back in the Antarctic.

Just a brief historical perspective to Saturday's frivolities.
