I was in a library today and read the HBR article. I guess I've read enough about D. Wayne over the years that not much was new to me.
I was, however, interested in the discussion of the economics of training horses. I suspect D. Wayne was poor-mouthing a bit. I can't believe he had to rely on stallion shares to be rolling in money during the Gene Klein years.
I wish there had been more discussion of the economics of owning horses and the client-relations/marketing aspect of being a trainer. I think that, in general, horse owners get crushed (a lot worse than the 20% takeout bettors face), and I'm curious how trainers confront that issue.
