Your post raised a question that I have had from time to time and then it leaves my head before I can find the answer. As I understand, Southern Hemisphere horses' birthday is July 1. They tend to be born after July 1 in year X and turn 1 on July 1 of year X+1, 2 in X+3, and most importantly 4 on July 1 of year X+4. What this means is that on the first Saturday in May, a Southern Hemishpere 3 year old is actually less than two months away from turning 4. Could such a horse enter the Kentucky Derby? Would it have to carry more weight? How big an advantage are those extra months? In human terms, is it like having an 18 year old entering a race that is only for 15 year olds? I suspect that the Derby is probably limited to Northern Hemishpere horses, but I always wondered if that were actually correct or could a Bobby Frankel-type pull a fast one in this regard.
