Sometime during the Derby media blitz it will be pointed out that all
thoroughbreds become 1 year older on January 1 no matter what the actual date
of their birth is.

TG is kind enough to supply the actual birthdate of horses along with all the
other statistical data which is included; apparently this information has been
supplied for the last 7 years. Here are the foaling dates for the last 7 Derby
winners: Barbaro 4/29; Giacomo 2/16; Smarty 2/28; Funny 4/20; War Emblem 2/20;
Monarchos 2/9; and FuPeg 4/12.

And, since it was a slow night here at work, with the help of the internet I
was able to go back a bit further: Charismatic 3/13; Real Quiet 3/7; Silver
Charm 2/22; Grindstone 1/25; THUNDER GULCH 5/23; Go For Gin 4/18; Sea Hero 3/4.

In the years between 1980- 1992, the information about foaling dates was harder
for me to come by, but here are incomplete results: Sunday Silence 3/25;
Alysheba 3/3; Swale 4/21; Sunny's Halo 2/11; PLEASANT COLONY 5/4 and Genuine
Risk 2/15.

I was not able to find foaling dates for Lil E Tee, Strike Gold (now standing
stud in Turkey), Unbridled, Winning Colors, Ferdinand, Spend a Buck or Gato Del
Sol.

And oh by the way NORTHERN DANCER was foaled 5/27.

This years May foals in the Derby: Dominican 5/4; Hard Spun 5/10 and Scat Daddy
5/11. The "oldest" 3YOs in the Derby hunt are Any Given Saturday and Nobiz,
both foaled 1/29. To be fair and scientific, it would have to be determined how
many May foals have actually contested the Derby over the years, and of course
it is likely that most Derby contestants have been foaled in February and
March, the peak foaling months.
