Re: Could lightening strike twice for Baffert in the Derby? (663 Views)

Marc and Bdsheets,

Don't get me wrong. All I said is that my future bet now has a "glimmer of hope." I am not suggesting that I plan to double up on the bet now that he is in the Baffert barn.

But, like him or not, you have to admit that Baffert is the best at getting 3yos to peak on Derby day.

It is true that Senor Swinger's top is currently only 4.75 and that he ran a disappointing Fla Derby but consider the following:

- He ran a 5 in the first start of his life and going 2 turns (that is faster than any race Empire Maker and Peace Rules had ever run prior to their most recent race)

- He backed that up with a 4.75 in his second start

- He is lightly raced young 3yo with only 2 starts

- He has yet to make a forward move

- He has had almost 4 months since his first start

- He switches to the barn of the most successful trainer of Derby horses

- He is probably healthy (I have to believe he got an exam and a clean bill of health before the purchase)

Maybe I am just being optimistic but that sure sounds like a potentially explosive horse to me.

I don't think it would be that much of a shock to see Senor Swinger improve 5 pts in his next two starts (one prep and then the Derby), which gives him a outside shot at the roses.

A stretch but certainly not impossible. If nothing else, the purchase probably increases the chance that he will at least make it into the Derby starting gate.

It will be interesting to see where he runs next and how he performs.

You never know...

Chris
