It takes weeks to months for certain substances (e.g. EPO and similar drugs) to clear a horse's system to the point of non-detection. It may not be a coincidence that a few previously red-hot trainers suddenly hit a "slump" a few weeks before the new "extensive testing protocol" starts up this fall for graded stakes races.

Either that or they suddenly forgot how to train...
