The negatives:

The last time a gelding won the Derby, the stock market crashed in 1929 Clyde Van Dusen, though in the 90's Best Pal 91, Prairie Bayou 93 and Cavonnier 96 all ran 2nd.

The Spiral (formerly Jim Beam) isn't a bastion of Derby winners, only Lil E Tee has ever achieved the feat and he ran in the Arky Derby.

The last horse to win with a six week layoff was Needles in 56 whose last race was a victory in the Florida Derby.

Positives:

Dosage profile: 8-3-18-0-1 (30pts) DI 2.00 CD 0.57 dominant Classicity (18) plus a point on the stamina side are a big plus. He looks as though he might be better suited for the grass.

He's been working well on the CD training track.

Eddie D. has won the Derby twice, two 2nds and a 3rd in 12 Derby starts.

Biggest plus is that he's never gone back on T-Graph sheets. 9s, 8.25s, 6.0s, 5.25r, 3.0r and the Spiral guess is in the 1-2 range.

It would be hard to leave him off any exotic ticket.

May they all come home safely!
