Horses will put up their best performance numbers for any number of reasons or a combination of two or more of them. Pace, distance, form cycle, jock, post position, track, etc.
Tonalist prefers to be outside of horses and prefers Belmont's surface and sweeping turns because he's a Forego type horse. Can't play this game with any level of success if you simply attach a performance number to a horse-- you have to know the horse as an individual including its connections.
Tonalist was a toss for me for two reasons-- being at a tight turn track like Keenland and for drawing the rail. But what do I know-- I keyed Frosted.
