I'd argue Dwight Gooden was the best player in MLB around that time, at least on the mound. Donnie couldn't hit quite as well as Boggs at that time for average but throw in the power numbers and he was likely the best non-pitcher during that span. But no one was as dominant as Doc during that period.
Cut and pasted from his Wikipedia page: In a span of 50 starts from August 11, 1984, to May 6, 1986, Gooden posted a record of 37–5 with a 1.38 ERA; he had 412 strikeouts and 90 walks in 406 innings.
And we all know what happened thereafter: Keith started taking Straw Man and Doc out on the town I'd guess.....
