They're running the John Nerud Stakes at Belmont Park this Saturday.
Check out this quote from Nerud in a Thoroughbred Times article dated 8/20/93.
"Of course, they all say SECRETARIAT was the best horse. Hell, SECRETARIAT was the fifth, or sixth best horse. SEATTLE SLEW was a better horse. SPECTACULAR BID and AFFIRMED were better horses. He gets the record because he had a social owner. He was a big chestnut with white on his legs and he won the Belmont Stakes G1 in record time and they stamped him as the standard ... by the media ... not the horsemen. He was a good horse. G-dam right, he was a good horse, but they all say MAN O' WAR, then SECRETARIAT."
"That's not right, but I ain't going to argue with it. What is said is all right with me. I know what I think.
The article was about DR. FAGER. There is no doubt who Nerud thinks is the best.
"DR. FAGER was the fastest horse that ever raced on the North American continent. He was an explosive runner. He ran for the sheer joy of running."
