Truth, or inconvenient facts, should never get in the way of a good story.
Besides AJ got a lot of his wisdoms from his pal Col Stingo who lived well into his nineties. Col Stingo's claim to fame, among many others, was that in 1930 he managed to sell Mr Widener an insurance policy that it would not rain between 11:00 A.M. and 5:30 P.M on any racing day at Belmont Park between Sept. 6th and Sept 13th. Well, insurance policy isn't quite the right word, since Mr. Widener was actually paying for the use of Col Stingo's machines which were designed to keep the rain away.
That's another great story, mostly true, full of track characters, like Mike the Bite, published as The Honest Rainmaker.
