Mall-- I just read the Finley piece, and it was good-- especially the part about crap going on with Wall street, and no one suggesting shutting down the stock market.
Many years ago I was down in Atlantic City with Friedman and another guy for a couple of weeks to play at the track there, which was still doing well. I came back before the other guys because I had work to do in Ragozin's office, and I left some bets with Len and went straight to Perry St. (pre 11th st.). When they got back from the track (night track), Len called me to tell me how I made out (it wasn't easy to get results from out of town tracks in those days). About 30 seconds into the call I hear another voice say, "Hang up the phone and put your hands up". I thought it was the TV, until the phone went dead.
So I called Ragozin into the room, told him LF was being robbed, and we started calling on two phones to try to get the number and reach the Atlantic City police department. I got through, told them what was going on, and they asked for the address. I told them, and they told me Len was technically in Ventnor, but they would be glad to give me the number of the local police to call. I did so, and the cops got over to the location. Total elapsed time, about 5 minutes-- but they missed the guys with guns who followed Len back from the track by about a minute.
Someone on the other board should get Len to tell the other story, the one where Len chased a guy who robbed him up Perry St., despite having his hands handcuffed behind his back. But it's his story to tell.
