How about this idea;
- put a purse cap on all 2yr old races
- make the BC classic & distaff restricted to 4yr olds & up
- change the 2 BC juve races to 3yr old only
- make the Triple Crown races for 4yr olds only and keep the dates as-is
The average fans filling the track on the big days would still show up; most of them couldn't tell the difference between Seattle Slew and Zippy Chippy...
Face it, the game has changed permanently, primarily because of new technology. They're getting that one big race out of these young ones; last year it was the derby preps; this year Matz hit the bulls eye in early May. What's gonna change this trend of "one and done" at this point? And the even younger ones?... can't speak for you, but if I was training a 2 yr old for Merv Griffin, I'd do anything technically possible to get him into the winners circle at the BC.
*note: I'm not providing any facts, only presenting an idea, and probably even a bad one for a few reasons. Please ignore it if it creates any negative emotional reactions, it is meant to be harmless. I don't have the racing heritage of the NY Times, but at least I can tell you who's running in the feature at Belmont today, and maybe even create a little drama around it to get a buzz going, and perish the thought, to actually get some people out there and turn that mausoleum into the lively wonderful place that it can be.
