The Latvian Orthodoxy has always been to fight like hell. The Latvian Red Army during the revolution of 1917/18 went to Moscow and helped put Lenin on the throne and became his personal guard. When Uncle Joe came to power, the first thing he did was liquidate them. German divisions manned by Latvians fought the Russians in Latvia to a standstill till the day Berlin fell. Groups of them continued fighting until the mid 50's, bringing the rath of Moscow on Latvia, with an intense russification policy. At the time of its 2nd independence, Latvia was barely 53% Latvian. That's enough for todays history lesson, LOL.
