Despite representing less than 40% of the entrants, Europeans have dominated the Breeders’ Cup Turf winning well over half of the Turf events (25/40 for 63% - yes there have only been 39 editions of the Breeders’ Cup Turf but there were two winners in 2003 with the dead heat of High Chaparral and Johar). There was only one instance where there was not at least one European in the trifecta (in 2022 there were two European trained horses landing in the trifecta). While Enable is the only horse to pull off the Arc-Breeder’s Cup Turf double, the Arc has produced 12 winners from the past 31 victors (39%), so that is a key race as is a Bel prep for US horses (usually the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic). Of the 25 Turf winners that invaded from across the pond, 14 Europeans have won in the last 17 years. Even Main Sequence, the 2014 victor (who is considered to be a home team winner) had more starts in Europe then he did in the US. Of the winners that raced in the US, 7 winners last prepped at Bel. Similar numbers are seen with the place horses. The Irish Champion has been very good with getting horses on the board (Anthony Van Dyck won that race prior to finishing third in the 2019 Turf) and most of the horses that ran in that race have run well in the Turf. Also note that over the last 8 years, an Aidan O’Brien horse has hit the board every time including three winners.
