Late money had a big effect in the Del Mar Futurity as well. Citizen Bull went from being shown as the 5/2 second choice when the gates opened to closing as the 6/5 favorite. Ran third.

He also wasn't favored based on the DD's from the 9th race. To be fair, he was favored in the Pick-3 will-pays, but that was based on a small amount of live money, since the $2 DD for races 8 and 9 paid $999.

I'm curious how much of the late money was CAW money. I've read that, while Santa Anita and Del Mar allow CAW teams to bet late in the win pool, their rebate is reduced if they do so.

I was watching TVG pre-race, and they made a big deal (including an owner interview) out of the fact that Baffert had said Citizen Bull was only 80% fit for his maiden win.
