I can tell you why the Alabama is so named.
At some point in the distant past NY racing was in financial straits. Harry M. Stevens, who was the caterer there and at many other tracks for years, either lent them money or did something that helped greatly to bail them out.
In gratitude, they wanted to name a race after Stevens. He, being apparently a standup guy, wouldn't hear of it. They insisted. Harry said, by way of compromise, they could name a race after where he was from.
He was from Alabama.
