Final note Re: "Ugly and Uglier" Derby Pattern Post Mortem (744 Views)

I thought it was interesting that 8 of the 9 fast horses with "ugly" patterns heading into the Derby almost all had some sort of physical problem either prior to or after the derby:

Kafwain - injured and out of training

Sir Cherokee - injured and out of training

Buddy Gil - Injured and out of training

Indian Express - Injure and will miss Preakness

Brancusi - Quarter Crack

Ten Most Wanted - Back injury?

Empire Maker - Foot bruise

The only horse with an ugly pattern heading into the Derby that has not had a publicized injury is Peace Rules.

Off short rest and an ugly top followed by an 02, he may be a great play against in the Preakness. Of course, he is trained by Frankel and it is very hard to toss one of his 3yos entered in a Grade 1.

However, this might be your best chance in a long time (remember M'dor in last year's Preakness off short rest and a similar pattern).

Cheers.

Chris
